What to Expect if You Need a Filling.
A filling is used to treat a cavity in a tooth. You may also need a filling to replace an old filling that is breaking down, to repair a chipped or cracked tooth, or to change the shape of the tooth.
At the start of the appointment, the dentist numbs the area where the new filling will be placed. They then remove the compromised area of the tooth, and fill the space with a filling material. Fillings restore decayed tooth structure back to normal shape and function. This means it feels natural to your tongue and the way you bite. Our filling material matches natural tooth colors and blends in, while also creating a bond to help strengthen the tooth.
What Types of Filling Materials Are Available?
There are several materials available for dental fillings, and the choice of material depends on factors such as the condition of your tooth, your desired appearance, and your budget. Your dentist will recommend the best option to restore both the function and appearance of your tooth.
Common materials used for fillings include gold, amalgam (silver), composite (plastic) resin, and porcelain. Metal fillings are typically used for back teeth (molars) because they are less visible when you smile. However, many patients prefer tooth-colored, metal-free options, regardless of the filling's location in the mouth. At our office, we favor advanced tooth-colored fillings made from durable composite resin or porcelain. These are ideal for the front teeth where a natural appearance is important, but they can also be used for back teeth, depending on the extent and location of the decay. Ultimately, the choice of material will be made through an informed discussion between you and your dentist.
What Happens During a Dental Filling Procedure
- We begin by administering a local anesthetic to numb the area, if necessary. For small fillings, numbing may not be required, but feel free to ask the dentist Round Rock if you're concerned about discomfort.
- The dentist will then remove the decayed portion of the tooth using a drill.
- After removing the decay, the dentist may use the drill to further shape the tooth, ensuring a better fit for the filling. Additionally, the dentist may apply an acid gel to etch the inner surfaces of the cavity, which helps the filling bond more securely.
- If a resin material is used, a special bright light will be applied to harden the filling.
- Finally, the dentist will polish the tooth to give it a smooth, shiny finish that blends seamlessly with the rest of your teeth.
